Early Life and Career

Roman Polanski, a producer and film director, faced numerous challenges throughout his life that were not enviable.

He was born on August 18, , in Paris, into a Jewish family. His father, Ryshard, was originally from Poland and worked as a painter and plastic manufacturer, while his mother, Bula, who was half Jewish and half Catholic, was born in Russia. In , the family moved to Krakow, where they found themselves caught in the midst of World War II.

Polanski's father survived internment in a concentration camp, but his mother tragically died in one of the gas chambers at Auschwitz. The horrors of the war would later serve as inspiration for one of Polanski's most significant films, "The Pianist."
