Mao Zedong () was the former communist leader of China and is commonly referred to as Chairman Mao, due to his long-standing role with the Communist Party of China.

His name has also been frequently translated into English as Mao Tse-tung, but this is less common now.

He was the founder of the People&#;s Republic of China, which he set up in and governed until his death in Under his rule, he converted China into a Communist state.
