Clifford Bastin was born in Heavitree, Exeter, England.
He began his football career with his hometown club, Exeter City, in 1928 at the age of 16. Despite playing only 17 games and scoring 6 goals, Bastin caught the eye of Arsenal manager Herbert Chapman.
Rise to Stardom with Arsenal
Chapman recognized Bastin's potential and signed him to Arsenal at the end of the 1928-29 season.
